A sports gaming firm Bangbet has come to the rescue of Kenyans unable to access justice by setting up mobile legal aid centers.
The betting firm will facilitate in the setting up of the legal aid centre’s infrastructure while the office of the Attorney General will provide space and personnel to run the program.
Bangbet will offer the centre’s legal offices by facilitating funds to improvise a container into an office then facilitate its electrical works and solar energy installation to enable the center have power for the services.
Each mobile unit will be fitted with two soundproof consultation booths, a legal aid and documentation area, virtual court hearing facilities, solar-powered energy systems and a wheelchair-accessible infrastructure for the disabled.
The trial project will start in Machakos pilot, and then expanded to all counties, supported by a network of State Counsel, pro bono advocates, paralegal officers, and volunteers through the Office of the Attorney General.
“This Legal Aid Centre in Machakos is the first step in changing that reality,” Oduor said. While the schedule for other centres has not been confirmed, the rollout will eventually cover all regions of the country.
“Access to justice should be a fundamental right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. Free legal aid services will transform this landscape, offering a lifeline to those who need it most,” said Kenya’s Attorney General Dorcas Oduor during the launch of the program.
